Digital Assets

Digital assets are any electronic form of data of value to an organization. An organization’s digital assets reside everywhere, on and off the network, viewed and copied by anyone, while at rest on a device, or in movement across networks, leaving the risk of a breach of these digital assets extremely high.  According to the recent  Verizon 2013 Data Breach Report, 40% of all breaches can be attirbuted to Malware.   Also, the study showed that 52% of breaches affecting all orginizations involved hacking.

Other threats that put a company’s digital assets include:

    • Targeted attacks
    • Lost equipment
    • Mergers and Acquisitions valuation loss
    • Disgruntled employees
    • Terminated employees
    • Unsecured ports and PC’s and Servers
    • Unsecured Wi-Fi
    • Vendor or Contractor network access
    • Unauthorized storage devices
    • Network and host vulnerabilities
    • THE UNKNOWN

The first challenge is to discover exactly what kinds of digital assets your organization possesses, the amounts you have accrued, as well as the locations they reside. This process is called eDiscovery and Classification. Again, digital assets are any form of electronic media that is valuable to your organization such as:

    • Electronic Branding
    • Office Documents
    • Source Code
    • Financial Records
    • Litigation Records
    • Product Plans/Formulas
    • Customers List, etc.

Due to the amounts of data and number of locations the data may reside, the process of discovery and classification can be difficult if not properly executed. RDi provides services to outsource this expertise, or can provide technology solutions you can bring in-house should you have the time and resources. This first step in digital asset protection may be the most important IT project ever undertaken by an organization or key employee or stakeholder. Benefits of a successful eDiscovery and Classification effort are:

    • Protect brand and company image
    • Reduce time and expense for legal defense for eDiscovery costs
    • Establish a reliable chain of custody during litigation
    • Gain knowledge of all your digital assets for valuation efforts
    • Satisfy Federal, State, and Industry regulatory requirements
